Sports Illustrated’s Peter King has doubts about whether safety Eric Berry is worth a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft this April.
Considering the release of safety Deon Grant last week, Berry seems like an option for the Seahawks with the No. 6 overall pick.
King has two main reasons to be wary of drafting Berry early:
- The first is health concerns at that position over the long term.
The nature of the position is smallish people throwing themselves around like linebackers, and that doesn’t lend itself to long careers.
- The other is that safeties picked in the top-10 haven’t worked out in the last decade.
Berry looks like a top-10 pick, but the team that takes him is going to be picking against history. Of the five top-10 safeties this decade, none has had franchise-player impact
This is just another piece of information to take into account when considering the many needs the Seahawks have in the upcoming draft.
