After so many close games, something was bound to change. Bellevue and Liberty played Friday night for the fourth time in less than a year, and the three previous games had been decided by a total of 12 points.
Friday’s game was not as close. The Wolverines beat Liberty 35-0 in a a state quarterfinal game, ending the Patriots’ season.
Liberty (8-4) couldn’t get its passing offense working without star receiver Jake Bainton, who missed the game due to academic issues. Standout senior quarterback Trey Wheeler finished with four interceptions.
His first two interceptions were costly as Bellevue built a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter. Liberty’s Chandler Jenkins was effective, rushing for 91 yards on 25 carries, but but it wasn’t enough to get Liberty back in the game.
Liberty went to state for the third consecutive season, the first time that’s happened in school history.
Bellevue will play Lakes in the state semifinals.
