Liberty’s Josh Gordon wins long jump title, Patriots finish second | 3A state track & field

Led by the first ever state track and field championships in school history, the Liberty boys team finished second at the 3A state meet.

Junior Josh Gordon won a title in the long jump. He covered a distance of 22 feet, 10.5 inches, more than eight inches better than second place. Gordon also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash and second in the high jump.

Gordon teamed with Hamilton Noel, Devin Bennett and Hiron Redmon to win the 4 X 400 state title. The Patriots finished nearly three seconds ahead of the second place team.

Bennett placed fourth in the 400, fifth in the triple jump and 11th in the long jump. Redmon finished third in the 800. Noel took sixth in the pole vault.

Chasey Kenney tied for ninth in the pole vault.

On the girls side, Madison Birdsall finished seventh in the 400.

Freshman Amy Broska took 17th in the 1,600 and 15th in the 3,200.

Liberty’s 4 X 200 relay team (Birdsall, Delane Agnew, Stacy Christensen and Elizabeth Ryker) finished 13th and the 4 X 400 relay team (Michaela Chucka, Agnew, Ryker and Birdsall) took eighth.

Jessica Pickering, a sophomore, tied for 12th in the pole vault. Junior Morgan Safley placed 13th in the shot put. Sophomore Anna Frodsham finished 13th in the javelin throw. Teammate Emily Pestl-Dimmitt took 15th in the same event.

The girls team tied for Decatur and Bellevue for 37th place.

 

Hazen

Senior Kyle Martin led the Highlanders with a third-place finish in the pole vault. Senior Starr Williams finished ninth in the 100, just 0.05 seconds out of the finals.

The boys team tied Camas for 27th on the strength of Martin’s place.
