It’s been a mix of disappointment and enthusiasm for the Renton tennis team this spring.
Disappointment in grade issues that have some of the team’s best players on the sidelines. Enthusiasm for the group’s talent and growing numbers.
Overall, second-year head coach Ashley Kohlmeier is happy with the program’s progress.
“Last year was a turning point in feeling like an actual team,” she said. “In feeling like we could compete.”
The Indians have 40 players this season, up from 25 last year. Kohlmeier, who works for Aces Tennis, promotes the program year-round.
Renton is 2-8 so far and Kohlmeier said it’s been a struggle to improve grades at times because she teaches at Dimmitt Middle School, not Renton High.
“Once the kids get their grades up, we could be competitive with a good majority of the teams in the Seamount,” She said. “Our results are below our actual talent level so far.”
Headlining the Indians is sophomore Theresa Vo. Vo played on varsity as a freshman last year. She is 12-11 this season (6-4 at No. 1 singles spot).
“I can definitely see her going the distance, even past the league tournament,” Kohlmeier said.
Renton’s top girls doubles team is Susan Kittavong and Hailey Corson.
“When they’re on they’re almost unbeatable,” Kohlmeier said. “If they can keep their heads right they would’ve won those close matches.”
Corson is one of just three seniors on the team.
Renton’s next match is Friday at Lindbergh. The Seamount League tournament is May 13-15.
