Starting pitching depth has hurt the Renton baseball team so far this season, and the Indians are off to a 2-5 start.
“It’s started off a little rocky, but it’s better than last year,” said Renton coach Chris DuBois. “Right now, what’s killing us is pitching depth.”
Junior Donovan Saario has been excellent for the team, pitching in each of the team’s two wins. Saario has a 0.60 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 15 innings on the season. He’s also hitting .556 with a .700 on-base percentage.
Senior Oliver Billon is the team’s starting shortstop and leadoff hitter.
“He gets on base and makes a lot of things happen,” DuBois said.
Billon was expected to be the team’s second starter, giving the Indians a strong 1-2 punch, but he’s been dealing with a shoulder injury and hasn’t been able to pitch yet.
Another key player has been senior P.J. Mattingly in left field. Mattingly is hitting over .300 and has provided solid defense.
Lindbergh
It’s been smooth sailing for the defending district champions. The Eagles have only been held under 10 runs in two games and their smallest margin of victory in any game is five runs (against Highline March 23).
Matt Stuart has four home runs and 17 RBI. He’s hitting .550. Billy Hernandez is hitting .500 with 12 RBI.
On the mound, Brett Love has three wins and a 0.58 ERA. Stuart has two wins and an ERA of 1.40.
Hazen
After a 5-3 loss against Highline April 3, Hazen has won three straight by a total score of 48-7.
Most recently, the Highlanders beat up on Tyee 26-2. Zac Kolterman, Jimmy Schmidt, Eric Jacobs, Alex Gayte and Jake Kolterman are among the standouts so far in the season.
Jake Kolterman nearly no-hit Kennedy Catholic earlier in the season (he lost the no-hitter with one strike left in the game). He struck out 12 Lancers.
Zac Kolterman no-hit Renton and struck out eight in a five-inning game April 7.
