Field renovations at Renton Memorial Stadium, Hazen High School and Lindbergh High School are on budget and on time, according to Renton School District spokesperson Randy Matheson.
The project at Renton Stadium got some unexpected good news when the pad under the old AstroTurf only needed cleanup and not replacement.
“It was a tremendous boost to the project,” Matheson said. “Both with time and money.”
Along with the new field turf, a new scoreboard, resurfaced shot put pads, new stadium lighting, new discus cages, renovated throwing events area, a resurfaced pole vault area and ball-control fencing on the ends of the field are planned.

Matheson said only the track and field work will be done this summer, while work to the stadium itself will be completed next summer.
Hazen will get a renovated natural grass surface, a six-lane rubberized track, more fencing and a pedestrian pathway at the main field. The lower field will be synthetic field turf and will get a new asphalt driveway, lighting and a scoreboard.

Lindbergh with also get a six-lane rubberized track, as well as a synthetic turf field, security control fencing, a lighting and scoreboard system and few more improvements.
Matheson said much of the work on the Hazen and Lindbergh fields will be to improve drainage to keep the fields usable during wet weather.

All three projects are on schedule to be completed sometime in August, in time for the beginning of the school year.
The funding for the projects comes from a voter-approved bond in May 2008.
In response to spending on the projects while simultaneously cutting funds in the district budget, Matheson clarified that the funds are completely separate.
“It’s two different parts of money,” he said. “We can’t use construction money approved by voters in the classrooms.”
