Renton girls basketball coach Tim White summed up this year’s edition of the Indians best: “They’re young, they will be competitive… but they’re young.”
Notice the pattern? Renton lost seven seniors and 85 percent of its scoring from last year’s team.
Junior point guard Priscilla Tuiasosopo is the highest returning scorer from last year at 4.3 points per game. This year, she’s averaging 8.8 while running the Indians’ balanced attack.
Five players, Tuiasosopo, Klarissa Quintas, Tia Bryant, LaRelle Hill and Taylor Farris are currently averaging between five and 10 points per game.
“It’s pretty even,” White said. “They all have a green light to shoot, just make your move.”
Quintas, Hill and Vanessa Tran are three of the team’s few seniors and will provide some essential leadership.
Freshmen Taylor Farris and Kiera Houston will also be playing quite a bit.
Farris is the team’s tallest player at 5-foot-10 and White is excited about her potential. Farris is leading the team with 9.7 points per game.
“I don’t bring freshmen up to varsity for no reason,” he said. “They can play.”
Other key players for Renton are junior Tia Bryant and sophomore Ericka Robinson.
White’s focus with the team is on defense. Renton will play as White’s teams have in the past, with plenty of pressure.
On offense, the team just needs to get used to each other on the court.
“This is a really good shooting team, they just need to gain confidence,” White said. “They have to get to know each other since they’re all so new together.”
Tran, one of the captains along with Tuiasosopo, said the team’s quest to figure each other out is progressing well.
“We don’t have the skills of last year’s team, but we’re more bonded,” Tran said. “We’re getting to know each other’s moves.”
