After picking up two more wins, the Hazen girls tennis team were upset this week by the Renton Indians 4-3 in a match their coach called a “nailbiter all the way.”
“This was about the tightest match we’ve ever played. Every match was really close and the leads changed many times,” Hazen Coach Gail Ellis said in an email.
In first singles, Hazen’s Misa Takami beat Xuttua Wu 6-0, 6-0, but in second singles, Renton’s Corisa Leon topped Yena Nguyen 6-4, 6-3. In third singles, Renton’s Isabelle Saechao pulled out a win over Jeanise Wong 6-4, 6-4, but Hazen even the score in fourth singles as Fulina Tran bested Cyrena Vilachi 6-4, 6-4 to knot the overall score at 2 matches apiece.
Things stayed tight on the doubles court as well with Renton’s second doubles team of Yesena Cruz and Kim Tran beating Melynda Phung and Melanie Aquino 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-7 and the Hazen third doubles team of Jacquelin Huang and Nicoline Krasilnikoff beating Christine Tran and Vivian Vo 6-4, 6-4 to knot the overall match at 3-3 with just the first doubles playing.
Hazen’s Jennifer Nguyen and Alison Tay were down 1-4 in the first set and came back to play a tie-breaker and then they were up in the second set 4-3 but Renton’s Yoon Manivanh and Nately Heng battled all the way back for the 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win.
Earlier in the week, Hazen beat Highline 5-2 on April 27 and then bested Foster 4-3 on April 28.
The Highlanders are now 11-3 overall and 10-2 in the Seamount League. They were scheduled to close out their season at Kennedy on Wednesday and at home against Tyee today, Friday.
Renton is now 7-5 overall and in the Seamount. They were scheduled to end their season with a home match against Evergreen on Wednesday and a trip to Foster today, Friday.
