A Renton woman has been charged with first-degree theft charges for allegedly stealing more than $43,000 from the Highlands Soccer Club.

King County prosecutors contend in charging documents that 32-year-old Jessica Rae Kupferer stole the money while serving as the club’s treasurer from February 2009 until March 2010.

The Highlands Soccer Club, located in Renton, supports youth soccer and affiliated with the Greater Renton Junior Soccer Association (GRJSA).

Highlands Soccer Club President Gerald Kaiser and his wife were told two HSC checks to the GRJSA had bounced on March 9, according to the charging documents. Kaiser tried unsuccessfully to reach Kupferer several times.

After Kupferer did not show up to a scheduled HSC board meeting March 15, Kaiser drove by her house but didn’t knock because all of the lights were off except a TV upstairs.

Kaiser went back to her house the next day. Kupferer’s young daughters answered the door and said Kupferer wasn’t home but allowed Kaiser to come inside and pick up the HSC checkbook.

Kaiser found the checkbook a “a mess with several pages torn and missing and several blank carbons,” according to the charging documents. He immediately went to the bank.

A review of the charges found Kupferer used the club check card to make purchases at Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, Target, Safeway, QFC, Albertson’s, Best Buy, Costco and Starbucks, among other businesses.

The documents say Kupferer’s first withdrawal of $7,400 was made Feb. 4, 2009 – the first day she had access to the club accounts.

The total of Kupferer’s charges and checks from the HSC accounts is $43,305.84.

The club offers programs from U5 to U10.

Arraignment is July 26 in Kent.
