Renton’s Steve Sholdra, Liberty’s Logan Briggs gain Ironman status | Boys swim

Even though they won’t be facing each other in the postseason again this year, Renton’s Steve Sholdra and Liberty’s Logan Briggs are still connected.

Both juniors achieved Ironman status, qualifying for state in every swim event, this week.

The two battled in the 500-yard freestyle state final last year, with Sholdra edging Briggs by about two seconds for second place. Briggs took third.

Renton moved to 2A this season, so the two won’t have a chance to face off at the state meet again.

Sholdra qualified in the 50 free and 100 fly on Tuesday. He is the first Renton swimmer to ever achieve Ironman status. Sholdra broke Renton’s 36-year-old record in the 500 free last season.

Briggs qualified in the 100 back Thursday to finish his quest. Briggs holds Liberty records in the 200 free and 500 free. He has the school’s second best times in the 200 IM, 50 free and 100 free.
