The Renton boys basketball team fell one game short of state after a 51-46 loss to Sumner in the West Central District 2A tournament at Foss High School Monday.
The game was winner-to-state, loser-out, so the Indians’ (12-12) season is now over.
The two teams battled through a closely fought, defensive game. Neither team led by more than six points in the second half.
Darren Briggs had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for Renton. He also had the play of the game with a steal and a dunk at the opposite end.
Renton entered the fourth quarter ahead 34-33 then the two teams weren’t separated by more than two points until Sumner built a four-point lead with just over three minutes left. Colton Hafey completed a three-point play with one minute left to pull Renton closer, but Sumner answered and maintained its lead.
Hafey scored nine points for Renton. Zack Lee scored eight.
