The Renton boys track team experienced something strange last season: a dual meet loss in league competition.
The Indians went 5-2 last year, which was good for third place. But that 2008 season came on the heels of four straight, undefeated league titles. Renton had gone 28-0 in league meets since 2004.
In that run, the Indians placed no lower than seventh at the 3A state meet. Last season the team placed 39th.
Armin Basic is Renton’s lone returning state competitor. The senior placed 16th in the shot put at the state meet. If not for a foul at the district meet, Basic would have likely been a threat for a top-three finish in discus at state too.
In a year when the Seamount is stacked with strong throwers, Basic should be able to gain Renton points most weeks.
Another standout on the boys side is Tevin Ponders on the hurdles. Ponders placed third in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles at the Seamount meet last season.
Other names to watch this year are senior Alex Nguyen and junior Evan Curry.
