Volleyball: Lindbergh beats Mount Rainier for first time since 2004, now second in Seamount

The Lindbergh volleyball team broke a streak and made a statement to the Seamount with a 3-2 win over Mount Rainier Thursday night.

The Eagles (6-4 overall, 4-1 Seamount) had not won against the Rams since 2004.

“We’ve managed to take a few sets off them in the intervening years,” said Lindbergh coach Bob Stewart. “But we could never close the deal.”

The statement? This team is a contender. After the win Lindbergh sits in second place in the Seamount, half a game behind Kennedy Catholic.

The Eagles have three regular season matchups left, Kennedy on Oct. 13, Tyee Oct. 15 and Evergreen Oct. 20. Kennedy is undefeated so far this season, while Evergreen is in third place in the Seamount.

Lindbergh took the first game 25-20 before stumbling in the second. The Rams cruised in that game, 25-6. Mount Rainier took another in the third, 25-15. Lindbergh bounced back to win 25-22 in the fourth and 15-12 in the clinching fifth game.

“I think we are beginning to understand that amazing things will happen when we play as a team,” Stewart said.

Kristin Huffman had nine kills, Erin White had nine. Kaylee Magat collected 31 digs, while Shayna Magat had 20 assists and three aces.

Kennedy Catholic 3, Renton 0

Renton fell to the undefeated Kennedy Catholic team 25-13, 25-12 and 25-16 Thursday night.

The Indians (4-4, 2-3) got 10 kills from Sarah Nelson and 14 assists from Aira Jose.

Renton is in sixth place in the Seamount.

Mount Si 3, Liberty 0

Liberty ran up against a strong Mount Si team and fell 25-13, 25-9 and 25-21 Thursday night.

The Patriots (5-5, 3-4 KingCo) have alternated wins and losses for the past seven matches.
