YEAR IN REVIEW: Slump busters, record breakers, much more in 2008-2009 year of Renton preps

It’s mid-June, which means the prep year is over and we begin the short months of summer until fall rolls back around. Here are some of the more memorable highlights of the past fall, winter and spring prep seasons in Renton sports.

There were many more athletes and accomplishments worthy of a mention, but I simply had to work with the available space. That said, congratulations to Renton’s preps for a great year of sports.

Fall

Lindbergh’s Jacob Allie had an all-around year to remember. The senior quarterbacked the Eagles into the state tournament with 32 touchdown passes. Allie leaves Lindbergh with school records in career touchdown passes, career passing yards, career completions, season touchdown passes, season passing yards and season completions.

Allie went on to finish third at state in the discus in the spring, throwing a distance of 152 feet, 10 inches. He also played a key role for the Lindbergh basketball team.

The Liberty football team had one of those moments that makes high school football great. The Patriots fell behind 17-0 against Kennedy in the state tournament but came back by outscoring the Lancers 21-0 in the final 17 minutes. A converted fake punt on 4th and 19 highlighted the effort.

Hazen super sophomore swimmer Lauren Kaufman placed third at state in the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight year and added a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard free for good measure.

Kaufman broke personal records in both races, while also taking down a decades-old Hazen record in the 50-yard free.

The Renton volleyball team ended the season strong and made the playoffs for the first time in decades.

After a brawl between the Tyee and Renton football teams, mass suspensions left Lindbergh without a homecoming football game.

But the Lindbergh girls soccer team saved the day, stepped up and played an unconventional homecoming game, while the football team cheered from the stands.

The Eagles tied a strong Mount Rainier team 3-3 and finished the season just one game away from state.

By the way, the Indians recovered just fine. They pounded Evergreen 40-8 in the next game and went on to the preliminary round of the state tournament for the second year in a row.

The Lindbergh boys cross-country team dominated league and district competition, then placed fourth at state. The Eagles were one of the Renton Reporter’s teams of the year (see the June 12 edition).

Winter

Freshman twin brothers Mark and Luke Garcia made an impact on the mats for the Lindbergh wrestling team. Each won league titles. Teammate Isiah Corwin also won a league title and all three advanced to state. Corwin placed fifth, Mark sixth and Luke eighth.

A pair of seniors finished outstanding high school basketball careers. Hazen’s Caleb Frary topped 1,000 career points and finished his career with 1,036 points — second on Hazen’s all-time list.

Lindbergh’s Marcissa McMillan was always great and often unstoppable for the Eagles. McMillan had a double-double in every game last season and three triple doubles. She averaged 18.2 rebounds per game her senior year.

The Renton boys basketball team stormed through the Seamount undefeated, finishing with a perfect, 16-0 league record. The Indians lost to Enumclaw in overtime, then to Foster (the third time the teams played during the season) by one point. A loss against state runner-up Columbia River ended Renton’s season.

The Lindbergh gymnastics team finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in over 10 years. Senior Louise Baker swept every event at the league meet and concluded an outstanding career. She finished 14th at state. The Eagles finished fifth in districts.

The Liberty wrestling team ran its record to 11-0, then sent eight wrestlers to state.

Liberty freshman Logan Briggs swam in four events at state, highlighted by his fourth-place overall finish in the 500 freestyle.

Hazen freshman Airashay Rogers carred the Highlanders to state for the first time since 1991. After a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat Bonney Lake and secure the state trip, Hazen fans and players stormed the court.

Spring

The Renton boys track and field team finished second in the state, the Hazen boys followed at eighth. The Liberty girls led Renton-area girls teams with an 11th-place finish.

In a banner year for track and field around Renton, Renton High’s Armin Basic and Ronielle Kelly-Battles, plus Hazen’s Andrey Levkiv all took state titles.

Basic dominated the discus, winning by nearly 22 feet. He also placed second in the shot put.

Kelly-Battles won the long jump while also placing fourth in the triple jump.

Levkiv won the shot put and placed sixth in the discus.

Renton’s Boryana Atanasova showed how well rounded she is by placing in three events at state. She finished fourth in discus, fifth in shot put and sixth in javelin.

Liberty won 20 baseball games, took the KingCo 3A/2A title and earned a trip to state in an outstanding season. Eric Peterson proved himself as one of the state’s best players, knocking out 12 homeruns and earning KingCo player of the year honors. The Kansas City Royals drafted Peterson June 10.

Lindbergh pitcher Casey Routos led the Eagles to a 15-win season and the district playoffs. Routos was a threat at the plate and piled up the strikeouts on the mound through the season.

The Lindbergh and Hazen baseball teams both had strong squads and battled for position near the top of the Seamount for much of the year.

The Renton softball team provided some of the best memories from the spring season. The team won a game for the first time in six years, and didn’t stop there. The Indians won four of five at one point and made the playoffs for the first time in 32 years.
